Law office closed Monday in observation of Labor Day, September 2

The law office of Brian Clymer Attorney at Law will be closed Monday, September 2, in honor of Labor Day, which pays tribute to the achievements of millions of hardworking folks across our country.

According to History.Com, “In the wake of this massive [labor] unrest and in an attempt to repair ties with American workers, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed it into law.”

In the late 1800s, workers often worked 12-hour days and seven days a week to make ends meet. Children as young as 5 years old worked in factories or mills. Machinery was unsafe, hours were long, and workers weren’t given breaks. Workers started to organize, which led to numerous strikes and rallies calling for improved working conditions and more safeguards. However, the legal theory allowing Congress to pass labor laws that impacted all the states equally had not yet been developed, so regulations (if any) varied state-by-state.

A few high-profile confrontations between workers and police led to violent clashes, resulting in deaths on both sides, and that’s when Congress stepped in to create a “workingmen’s holiday”.

Happy Labor Day!
